Matthew Cleary

Matthew was born and raised in Victoria, BC. His undergraduate studies at the University of Victoria were broad and varied, including sciences, social sciences, humanities and languages. He ultimately chose to major in anthropology, with a focus on cultural anthropology and ethnography, with a particular interest in Central and South American cultures.

During his time in law school, Matthew developed a keen interest in tort law, which guided the trajectory of his studies and his time as an articled student and junior lawyer.

Since his call to the BC Bar in 2009, Matthew has focused on representing plaintiffs in personal injury cases and tort law. He is dedicated and passionate about achieving justice for his clients. Matthew loves being a lawyer because practicing law and, particularly, representing injured plaintiffs, allows him to help people who really need someone to work and fight for them.

Matthew travelled extensively in his younger years throughout Central and South America and Southeast Asia, operating an import-export art and furniture business and teaching ESL. This, along with his background in anthropology, helped him to appreciate different places and cultures, as well as our common humanity.

Outside of work, Matthew enjoys spending time with his family and dog, gardening, travelling, hiking, fishing, reading detective and mystery novels and watching live sports (particularly, the Whitecaps and BC Lions). He is a proficient (self-taught) speaker of Bahasa Indonesian and has limited proficiency in Spanish.
