Car accidents have an enormous impact on Albertans every year. What do we know about the facts? Well, there are around 100,000 car accidents every year in Alberta. We know that approximately 13,000 people are injured in these accidents, and around 250 people are killed each year, most commonly individuals between the ages of 15 and 24. The number of people killed on our roads usually increases every year.

The most common time for an accident is during rush hour on Fridays. Additionally, we know that not wearing your seatbelt doubles your risk of injury. The most common types of accidents that we see at Preszler Injury Lawyers are rear-end collisions and accidents involving left-turning vehicles. In these cases, a vehicle turning left may cause a collision with another vehicle going straight.

The easiest way to avoid rear-end accidents is to leave enough space for the vehicle in front of you. You want to ensure that you have enough time to react and brake to avoid causing an accident. If you are the vehicle in front, make sure to brake early. You want your taillights to be on to give warning to the vehicle behind you, allowing them time to stop.

When it comes to left-turn accidents, remember that a yellow light does not mean to speed up; it means to slow down. This is especially important if there is a vehicle waiting to turn left in front of you, as we know that left-turning vehicles often wait for the yellow light to make their turn.

The good news is that most people involved in a car accident will recover. However, the bad news is that a significant percentage will not. Studies show that up to half of the people suffering from concussions do not recover within the first year or longer. Additionally, studies indicate that 25% of individuals with whiplash do not recover and may go on to suffer from chronic pain. We also know that neck and back injuries can lead to problems later in life with your spine, potentially speeding up the arthritic process.

Similarly, fractures involving a joint, such as a knee, wrist, or shoulder, can worsen over time. The cartilage in those joints can wear away, leading to increased symptoms. Over time, you may need that joint replaced or even fused in place.

What we tell clients is to not just think about how you are doing now, which is important, but also to consider how you will be doing 10 or 20 years from now. Will these injuries mean you retire early? Will your medical expenses increase as you get worse? It is crucial to understand your injury before settling. Know if you are going to get better. If you still have problems two years after an accident, that may indicate you now have a chronic injury, and it may not get better—in fact, it probably won't.

When you hire a good lawyer, they will be concerned about two things. First, they will focus on how you are doing now, meaning they will work to ensure you get better and that the insurance company covers all of your treatment. Second, they will be concerned about the future, which means fair compensation. Every single penny taken away from you now or in the future must be returned to you. This includes every dollar of lost income, every dollar for medical expenses, out-of-pocket expenses, and fair compensation for your pain and suffering.
