Car accidents have an enormous impact on Albertans every year. What do we know about the facts? Well, there are around 100,000 car accidents every year in Alberta. Over 13,000 people are injured in those accidents, and around 250 people are killed each year. Most commonly, those fatalities involve individuals between the ages of 15 and 24. The number of people dying on Alberta's roads generally increases each year. The most common time for an accident is during rush hour on Fridays.
We also know that not wearing your seatbelt doubles your risk of injury. The most common types of accidents that we see at our firm are rear-end accidents, where someone is not paying attention and rear-ends the vehicle in front of them, and vehicle collisions involving left turns. This includes situations where someone makes a left turn when it is unsafe to do so or someone blows through a late yellow light, causing an accident.
What is the easiest way to avoid these accidents? First, leave space for the vehicle in front of you. You want to ensure you have enough time to brake. The good news is that most people involved in car accidents get better. The bad news is that a significant percentage do not. Studies show that up to half of the people suffering concussions, for example, do not recover in the first year or even longer. We know that studies indicate that 25% of people who experience whiplash do not recover and go on to suffer chronic pain.
We also know that neck and back injuries can cause problems later in life with your spine by speeding up the arthritic process. Similarly, fractures that involve a joint, such as a knee, wrist, or shoulder, can worsen over time because the cartilage wears away due to the fracture and how that joint has been disrupted. This can lead to worsening symptoms and may require surgery to fuse the joint in place or even replace the joint.
What we tell clients is that you need to think about not just how you are doing now, but also how you will be doing 10 years from now or 20 years from now. Will you have to retire early? Will your medical expenses go up? These are all things you have to consider before settling your case. Know your injury before you settle. Understand if you are going to get better. If you are still having problems two years after an accident, it has probably become a chronic injury that is not going away.
When you hire a lawyer to take care of you and your accident and your injuries, make sure that lawyer is concerned about at least two things. First, the most important thing is getting you better. Your lawyer needs to ensure that the insurance company is covering all of the treatment you need so you can recover. Second, getting you fair compensation means obtaining every single penny that the accident takes from you now or in the future and getting it returned to you and your family. This includes every dollar of lost income, every medical expense, every out-of-pocket expense, and every penny you are owed for pain and suffering.
